I apologize for the long narrative, but I would be very grateful for any help/insight/advice as to why this is happening and what can I do to solve the problems. Complicating matters is the fact that we will be leaving for a week's vacation, and I need to get a handle on this problem before we leave tomorrow night. I'm also concerned about letting the filter and water pump run because the residual is coating the filter tentacles and the PSI subsequently rises. So, after spending all day Saturday and Sunday continuously vacuuming my pool and running the filter, which I've backrinsed and recharged with DE 4 times, I woke up this morning with a fresh coating of whitish-grey ash on the bottom of my pool which I have since vacuumed and recharged my filthy filter for the fifth time since Saturday. per 10,000 gallons of water however, I chose to follow the instructions that the pool experts at Leslie' gave to me. I should also point out that the directions on the Soda Ash container advised mixing it with water at a rate of 1 lb. The staffer said he's never seen or heard of anything like this and had no explanation or solution for me. I expressed my belief that, after following the Leslie staffer's directions to a T, that the fallout on the bottom of my pool.and the cloudiness.was due to the excessive amount of Soda Ash mixed into the pool. I took pictures of the pool bottom and a water sample to Leslie's. On Saturday, I awoke to find that my pool was cloudy and had a residual fallout of whitish-grey ash covering the bottom of the pool. I did all of this on Thursday/Friday, draining and refilling the pool, then adding the Soda Ash as recommended by the Leslie's staffer who also told me to add the Tri-Chlor tabs to the chlorinator, but that I should buy his tabs and not use the Aqua-Chem tabs that I had been using. every two hours by sprinkling the granules around the pool perimeter while the pump is running.
I was also told to add 15 lbs of Soda Ash in increments of 5 lbs. The staffer at Leslies told me that my CYA was now down to 150 and I needed to drain 8-10 inches of water from my pool and refill to reduce the CYA. My test strips showed me that, after two weeks, I had zero chlorine, high levels of CYA and Ph was still low therefore, I decided to go to Leslies Pool Supplies for another water analysis and a second opinion.
I was also told that my chlorine levels were excessively high and to wait two weeks before shocking the pool with 18 ounces of chlorine granules. CP also recommended that I stop using the 3" tri-chlor tabs because, I was told, that is what caused the high CYA level. I was told to add 5 lbs of soda ash 4 hours apart, for a total of 10 lbs., and to add 32 ounces of Akalinity Plus to raise Ph. of soda ash and a bottle of Alkalinity Plus. I was also told that my Ph was low and was sold 10 lbs. Crystal Pools recommended that I use an expensive chemical called Bio-Active at $50 per 8 ounce bag to reduce the CYA. Recently, my 18,000 gallon pool registered an excessive CYA reading of 190. I am also overwhelmed by the mountain of information.and conflicting information.that I have received from two competing pool companies. I am a new to pool ownership and new to the forum.
